Nothern Ireland, Wales face FIFA investigation over poppies

FIFA open disciplinary proceedings against the Irish and Welsh Football Associations over the display of poppies in their recent World Cup qualifying fixtures.

The Irish and Welsh Football Associations have been notified that they will face a FIFA investigation after poppies were on display in their most recent international fixtures.

The display of poppy symbols has been a hot topic of debate, with England and Scotland both wearing the Remembrance Day tributes in their World Cup qualifier on November 11, despite being advised against it by FIFA.

It was later revealed that the two nations would face disciplinary proceedings, and world football's governing body has followed suit with both Northern Ireland and Wales.

A day after England's clash with Scotland, poppy symbols were on display during Northern Ireland's clash with Azerbaijan while the same occurred during Wales's contest with Serbia, with both sets of supporters forming a poppy mosaic in the stands.

Like England and Scotland, both football associations must now wait to see if any sanctions are imposed ahead of the next batch of World Cup qualifying matches.
