Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott "deeply regrets" praising supporters for throwing objects towards officials in his side's defeat to the San Francisco 49ers.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has apologised for his post-match comments towards the officials following his team's NFL Wild Card playoff defeat to the San Francisco 49ers.

The Cowboys - whose most recent Super Bowl triumph came all the way back in 1995 - went down 23-17 to the 49ers in a contest that was marred by objects being thrown towards the officials.

Prescott initially credited the supporters for doing so, but the 28-year-old has now issued an apology on social media and claims that he "deeply regrets" his comments.

Prescott wrote on Twitter: "I deeply regret the comments I made regarding the officials after the game on Sunday. I was caught up in the emotion of a disappointing loss and my words were uncalled for and unfair.

"I hold the NFL Officials in the highest regard and have always respected their professionalism and the difficulty of their jobs.

"The safety of everyone who attends a game or participates on the field of a sporting event is a very serious matter. That was a mistake on my behalf, and I am sorry."

Prescott completed 23 passes for 254 yards in the defeat to the 49ers, as well as a touchdown and interception.
