Yohan Blake stunned by South Africans in 100m Commonwealth Games final

Jamaica's Yohan Blake is forced to settle for bronze in the men's 100m final at the Commonwealth Games, with South Africa claiming gold and silver.

Jamaica's Yohan Blake has been forced to settle for bronze in the men's 100m final at the Commonwealth Games, with South Africa's Akani Simbine and Henricho Bruintjies claiming gold and silver respectively.

Blake had been widely tipped to top the podium on the Gold Coast, with many going as far as to proclaim him the heir-apparent to retired compatriot Usain Bolt as the king of sprint.

However, the 28-year-old - silver medallist in the event at the London Olympics in 2012 - was always playing catch-up throughout the race as South Africa claimed a memorable one-two at Carrara Stadium.

Simbine - a fifth-placed finisher at the Rio Olympics in 2016 - tore clear of the rest of the pack to post a time of 10.03s, 0.14s quicker than his closest challenger Bruintjies.

Bruintjies, who failed to even make it through his heat in Rio, crossed the line in 10.17s, beating Blake to silver by the narrowest of margins.

Despite only being a whisker away from a silver medal, Blake also almost missed out on a medal entirely, finishing in exactly the same time as Nigerian Seye Ogunlewe in fourth.

England's Adam Gemili had been due to participate having posted the third-fastest qualifying time, but he was forced to pull out just hours before the race due to injury.
