Eilidh Child books 400m hurdles final spot as fastest loser

Eilidh Child reaches the 400m hurdles final as one of the quickest losers after finishing third in her semi-final in Beijing.

Eilidh Child has booked a spot in the final of the 400m hurdles after clinching one of the fastest loser spots in her semi-final.

The 28-year-old, who finished fifth in the final two years ago in Moscow, was slightly ahead on the final bend but was overtaken by American Cassandra Tate and South Africa's Wenda Nel in the latter stages to finish third in 54.80 seconds.

A slower second race, which was won by Sara Slott Petersen ahead of Commonwealth champion Kaliese Spencer ensured Child held onto one of the spots and her progress was confirmed when she remained the quickest loser after the third semi-final.

However, it was a disappointing outcome for fellow Brit Meghan Beesley, who faded in the final 100m of the final semi-final to finish third in 55.41 seconds.

Defending champion Zuzana Hejnova cruised to victory in the third semi-final, while Janieve Russell claimed second behind the favourite.
