Egan siblings 'proud' to represent Ireland at Baku 2015

Ireland's Jennifer Egen talks up her strong family bond with fellow Baku 2015 hopeful Peter Egan.

Peter Egan has admitted that representing Ireland alongside his sister at the inaugural European Games is a "special" achievement for the family.

The 35-year-old competed in the men's kayak double 1,000m event on Sunday, finishing seventh in the second heat.

Egan will also enter the K2 200m and K1 5000m this week, while sibling Jennifer Egan qualified for the women's 500m final with a new national record.

"It is quite special for us as brother and sister representing team Ireland," Peter Egan told reporters. "We have been on a good few trips together to the European Championships, World Cups and the World Championships. But for both of us, this is the first experience in an Olympic environment."

Jennifer Egan, who is out of the running for a medal in the women's kayak final, added: "We are so close, we also train together at home.

"We support each other, he is always there when I feel a little bit down or nervous. He is always there to help me and likewise, I'm there for him."

Ireland have yet to win a medal at this year's Games.
