Melanie Hill, known for playing Cathy Matthews on Coronation Street, joins the cast of medical drama Casualty.

Former Coronation Street star Melanie Hill has joined the cast of Casualty playing a no-nonsense manager at Holby City Hospital.

The actress was on Corrie for seven years playing Cathy Matthews, but the character departed Weatherfield last summer after deciding that she wanted to start a new life away from boyfriend Brian (Peter Gunn).

On Casualty she will take on the role of Siobhan Mackenzie, a new Clinical Nurse Manager who promises to "ruffle a few feathers".

"I am delighted to be joining the cast of Casualty and I can't wait for fans to meet Siobhan," said Hill, 61.

"She's a supremely competent manager, who is firm but fair and expects nothing but the best from her nursing team.

"However, get on the wrong side of her and she'll make mincemeat out of you! I'm sure she's going to ruffle a few feathers in the Emergency Department."

Jon Sen, the drama's executive producer, added: "I am so excited to welcome Melanie to the team.

"I've been a huge admirer of her work for years and it's wonderful to see her here at Holby.

"We've got brilliant stories lined up for Siobhan and can't wait for the audience to meet her."

Siobhan will make her on-screen debut in early 2024.
