'The Archers' to take three-week break

Radio 4 confirms that The Archers will be replaced by classic episodes for three weeks in May due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Archers is to take a break from airing new episodes for three weeks due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The long-running Radio 4 soap recently confirmed that it would stay on air throughout the lockdown, with actors instead recording their lines from home.

The logistics of switching to remote production have proved more challenging than first anticipated, however, meaning that a three-week break will be necessary next month.

During the period, Radio 4 will air three weeks of classic episodes from the last few decades, themed around important life events (week one), homes and farms (week two) and annual traditions (week three).

"We know our listeners tune in to The Archers for many different reasons, not simply entertainment but escapism and companionship too," said Jeremy Howe, editor of The Archers.

"We're working tirelessly in challenging circumstances on writing and producing new episodes in a different, simpler format with cast recorded in their homes, but with that work taking a little longer than anticipated we want listeners to be able to continue visiting Ambridge.

"The Archers is steeped in rich heritage and many listeners have said they're keen to hear again, or hear for the first time, important moments in the lives of Ambridge residents. So we're selecting episodes from the last two decades we hope will give the audience new insight or an enjoyable trip down memory lane."

The classic episodes will air between May 3 and 24, with new episodes resuming on May 25.
