Normal People to return for Irish Comic Relief sketches

Two Normal People sketches are to air this Friday as part of the Irish version of Comic Relief.

Normal People is to return for two special sketches as part of the Irish version of Comic Relief.

The acclaimed drama, which stars Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones as Irish teens Connell and Marianne, has been a phenomenal success since its release in April, with an estimated 50 million requests through BBC iPlayer alone.

Calls for a second series have yet to be met, although Mescal and Edgar-Jones will reprise their roles for a couple of comedy sketches in RTE's telethon on Friday night.

Comic Relief founder Richard Curtis told RTE Radio: "There's a beautiful piece called Normal Older People, which is imagining what would have happened to Marianne and Connell 40 years from now. I promise you, these are two very special bits.

"It's so much better than anything we've ever made. I mean I can't even say all about it because there's a guest star in it. But it's really, it's really beautiful.

"One of the things about Comic Relief is it just gives opportunities for things to happen that would never happen. I can't imagine any context in which they would have allowed this little sort of extra special into the world of Normal People."

Other sketches on the Irish Comic Relief night include Derry Girls "with an A-list twist" and a special scene from The Young Offenders featuring Roy Keane.
