Taika Waititi to direct, co-write new Star Wars film

Oscar-winning director Taika Waititi is to direct and pen a new Star Wars spinoff movie.

Jojo Rabbit director Taika Waititi has been named as the director and co-writer of the next movie in the Star Wars franchise.

The Oscar winner made his debut in the universe last year by directing the first season finale of the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, to much acclaim.

The new project - announced on the celebratory "May the 4th" day - is yet to have a name or release date, although there is speculation that it could fill the December 16, 2022 slot that Disney has set aside for a Star Wars movie.

Waititi will write the script alongside Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who recently earned an Oscars nomination for her work on WWI epic 1917.

The new film from Waititi is just one of multiple Star Wars films currently in development, with Marvel's Kevin Feige also working on a spinoff and The Last Jedi's Rian Johnson developing a new trilogy.
