Sam Ryder emerges as a surprise contender for this year's Christmas number one, trailing Wham! by just 42 chart units in the midweeks.

Sam Ryder has emerged as a surprise contender to land this year's Christmas number one, according to the latest data from the Official Charts Company.

After 48 hours of sales, the Eurovision hero is currently at number two with his track 'You're Christmas To Me' - an impressive feat, as the single is an Amazon Music exclusive.

Ryder trails the current number one, Wham! classic 'Last Christmas', by just 42 sales, with Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas' currently in third place.

Ed Sheeran and Elton John collab 'Merry Christmas' is at four in the midweeks, while 'Fairytale of New York' by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl is still in fifth.

Elsewhere, the best-selling single of the week so far goes to the TikTok super-group Creator Universe and their cover of 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day', which is currently just 33 chart units outside of the top 10.
