Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain may avoid making a move for Barcelona captain Lionel Messi due to a transfer pact between the financial powerhouses.

Lionel Messi's proposed departure from Barcelona is in jeopardy due to a transfer pact between top European clubs, according to a report.

After informing the Catalan giants of his desire to leave the club, Messi's future has become the major talking point of the summer transfer window.

Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have been the two sides most strongly linked with a swoop for the Argentine, as both clubs would appear to be the most financially capable of pulling off a deal.

However, Marca reports that the two European powerhouses are looking to avoid any aggressive tactics that could potentially land them in hot water with regards to Financial Fair Play regulations.

Messi's release clause at Barca is currently set at £630m, despite the fact that the six-time Ballon d'Or winner believes he can leave as a free agent due to a separate clause in his contract.

However, the 33-year-old is reportedly open to changing his mind and staying at Camp Nou, where he has amassed 634 goals from 731 games in all competitions.
