Spain 0-1 Honduras

A second successive 1-0 defeat sees Spain exit the Olympic Games at the group stage.

Pre-tournament favourites Spain have been knocked out of the Olympic Games thanks to a 1-0 loss at the hands of Honduras at the Sports Direct Arena this evening.

After a bright start to the match, Honduras broke the deadlock with eight minutes played thanks to Jerry Bengtson, who beat David de Gea in the Spanish goal.

The Hondurans continued to attack the Spaniards in search of a second goal. Their best two chances fell to Mario Martinez, but De Gea was equal to both efforts.

Chelsea's Juan Mata had Spain's best opportunities to draw level. However, the attacker was unable to keep his shots on target and as a result Honduras went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

Spain controlled the second half from the first whistle as they went about searching for a route back into the encounter.

They came close in the 55th minute when Adrian Lopez's shot struck the post, before his rebound effort was held by Jorge Mendoza in goal.

Strike duo Cristian Tello and Rodrigo were introduced from the bench and both had chances in front of goal, but neither caused too much trouble to Mendoza between the posts.

Rodrigo thought he should have had a penalty in the last minute, but the referee dismissed his protests.

The result has left Spain bottom of Group D, while a draw against Japan next time out will see Honduras qualify for the quarter-finals.
