Christian Horner calls for crowd-funding ban

Christian Horner claims that Formula 1 fans shouldn't have to pay to bail out struggling teams.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner has criticised Caterham for turning to fans in order to help save the struggling Formula 1 team.

Caterham's administrator announced the plan on Friday, which is designed to raise £2.35m and would see the team race in the final round of the championship at Abu Dhabi.

However, Horner believes that the task of saving constructors shouldn't fall to fans.

He told Sky Sports News: "It's very difficult; certainly I don't agree with fans having to fund a team. The fans pay to be entertained by the teams, they shouldn't have to pay for a team.

"The concept of that is wrong and shouldn't be allowed. Its important Formula 1 doesn't do it's dirty washing in public.

"Last time we had a bit of a crisis at the end of 2008 when we lost a couple of teams, with Honda pulling out, and BMW, that's exactly what happened and there were immediately measures put in place that genuinely saved costs for all the competitors."

On Friday, fellow F1 backmarker Marussia ceased trading with the loss of 200 jobs at its Banbury base.
