Fernando Alonso: 'Formula 1 needs smaller teams'

Fernando Alonso urges Formula 1 to find a way for smaller teams to survive.

Fernando Alonso has called on Formula 1 to help smaller teams to survive in the sport rather than have big constructors running three cars next season.

Caterham have vowed to compete at the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi next weekend, but their long-term future remains in doubt and Marussia have already ceased trading.

However, Alonso believes that smaller constructors play an important role in developing new talent.

The Spaniard told Autosport: "I started with a small team, Minardi, all the drivers [should have] the same possibility to start with small teams.

"We need everyone in the sport - more teams and more things happening around F1 will help. Hopefully we will find a solution.

"I don't exactly know what are the problems and what are the possible solutions, but I know that everyone has tried to meet to find a solution and I'm sure they will do the best for the sport, and we will support [them]."

Alonso was given his first drive by Minardi in 2001 before switching to Renault, where he won two world championships.
