TeamGym European Championships: Interview - Liam Gallagher & Connor Wharram

Sports Mole reporter Ben Knapton speaks to GB TeamGym gymnasts Connor Wharram and Liam Gallagher about their preparations for the European Championships.

Having been given the green light to return to training amid the coronavirus pandemic, Bracknell Gymnastics Club are stepping up their preparations for the rescheduled TeamGym European Championships.

The biennial event sees gymnasts at junior and senior level partake in three pieces of apparatus – tumble, floor and trampette – and Great Britain will endeavour to win their first ever medal at senior level when the 13th European Championships takes place next April in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Two Bracknell gymnasts looking to aid GB's efforts of bringing a medal home are Liam Gallagher, 29, and Connor Wharram, 23, both of whom have helped propel the sport into a new dimension across the UK in recent years.

Gallagher and Wharram are two of only three male TeamGym athletes who hold the esteemed accolade of Master Gymnast – the award presented to those who have represented Great Britain at three international competitions at senior level.

Wharram has competed at the Europeans twice at junior level in 2010 and 2012, and three times at senior level in 2014, 2016 and 2018.

Gallagher, meanwhile, has sported the GB colours four times as a senior gymnast (2010, 2012, 2014 and 2018), and both men were a part of the Bracknell Senior Mixed team that took the gold medal at the 2019 TeamGym British Championships.

Here, Gallagher and Wharram speak to Sports Mole reporter Ben Knapton about the European Championships and how they have managed to keep their skills in check during these troublesome times.
