Wallabies coach Robbie Deans claimes that his side#s Tri-Nations victory is "irrelevant" to the World Cup.

Australia coach Robbie Deans has hailed his team’s Tri-Nations victory, but claims that the result will have no bearing over his team's World Cup efforts.

The Wallabies defeated New Zealand 25-20 on Saturday to claim their first Tri-Nations championship since 2001.

"It's obviously a significant result for us," Deans said after the clash. "In terms of the World Cup it's irrelevant and if anything we've probably just put the bar up to that end certainly should we be fortunate enough to meet the All Blacks again.

"But we'll take some real value out of it, there's no doubt about that. These blokes really kept their nerve, got their hands on the ball and produced enough pressure to get the result, so that was an important step for us."

Australia kick-off their World Cup campaign against Italy on Sunday, September 11.
