Record-breaking David Phelps wins shooting gold for Wales on birthday

Shooter David Phelps wins Wales's seventh gold medal of the Commonwealth Games with victory in the men's 50m rifle prone final - the same title he won in 2006.

David Phelps has won Wales's seventh gold medal of the Commonwealth Games with victory in the men's 50m rifle prone finals this afternoon.

The Welshman - who turns 41 today and is appearing in his fifth Commonwealths - set a new Games record with his mark of 248.8, narrowly beating fellow Brit Neil Stirton to the top of the podium.

Scotland's Stirton - gold medallist in the event eight years ago in Delhi - was forced to settle for silver having registered a mark of 247.7 as Phelps regained the title he had previously won 12 years ago in Melbourne.

England's Kenneth Parr narrowly missed out on a chance to fight for the gold medal on the final elimination despite scores of 10.5 and 10.6 leaving him just 0.4 behind Stirton's overall mark.

Parr instead picked up a second consecutive bronze medal, having also finished third in Glasgow four years ago.

Scotland's Leonard Thompson was also competing, but he was the first to be eliminated in the second round and finished bottom of the pile on the Gold Coast.
