Ariarne Titmus storms to 800m free gold

Ariarne Titmus wins the women's 800m freestyle by more than seven seconds to storm to her second gold medal of the Commonwealth Games.

Ariarne Titmus blew the rest of the field away on her way to gold in the women's 800m freestyle final at the Commonwealth Games this evening.

The Australian led from the front and never looked like surrendering that advantage as it continued to grow throughout the race, eventually finishing more than seven seconds clear of her closest challenger.

Titmus touched the wall in 8:20.02, whereas compatriot and silver medallist Jessica Ashwood came home in the time of 8:27.60.

Indeed, it was another Aussie clean sweep as their remarkable success in the pool continued, with Kiah Melverton picking up the bronze medal to join Titmus and Ashwood on the podium.

Titmus has now won two golds and a silver at these Games, having also triumphed as part of the 4x200m relay team and finished second in the 200m freestyle.

England's Holly Hibbott came home in fourth place, just under half-a-second off the medal spots, whereas defending champion and Games record holder Jazz Carlin could only manage a sixth-place finish and was more than 19 seconds off her record-setting pace in Glasgow four years ago.
