Ali Jawad: 'Setting new world record was my target'

England's bronze medalist Ali Jawad claims that he achieved his target by setting a new world record in the Para-sport lightweight powerlifting event at the CWG.

Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Ali Jawad has claimed that he achieved his target by setting a new world record in the Para-sport lightweight powerlifting event.

Nigeria's Paul Kehinde took gold with 221 points, with teammate Rolland Ezuruike claiming silver, but Jawad declared himself happy after lifting 194kg on his final attempt to earn 209.4 points, and beat his own 59kg category world record by 4kg.

"I wanted to break the world record and I've done that - Nigeria didn't break the world record today, I did," the 25-year-old, who was born without legs, told reporters. "I don't think you can do much more than break the world record - there's nothing more to prove.

"I broke it by 4kg which is a huge amount to break it by in this sport, so to me this bronze medal feels like a gold medal, and I hope people see it like that."

The points in the event are worked out by a formula which equates each athlete's bodyweight to a coefficient, before multiplying that number with their best result.
