Jaswant Shergill pleased with Commonwealth Games performance

Team England weightlifter Jaswant Shergill admits that he was delighted to have set a personal best at the Commonwealth Games despite missing out on a medal.

Team England weightlifter Jaswant Shergill has revealed that he is pleased with his performance at the Commonwealth Games despite missing out on a medal.

The 21-year-old finished fourth in Group B of the men's 62kg class in Glasgow after lifting a total of 250kg to set a personal best, but will not have a chance to win a medal as Group A competes later today.

He told reporters: "I'm really happy with the numbers that I put up. As an athlete you always want that bit more and I'm very happy with how I performed. It's been a big step forward for me.

"I've been training really hard for this but it's still my first big competition as a senior. It has been incredible – I'm only 21 and to go to the Commonwealth Games and compete in front of this crowd is a great experience.

"It's the perfect platform to take your weightlifting further. I've got a long way to go and this is a great experience to have behind me."

Team Wales's Gareth Evans finished top of Group B with a total lift of 268kg.
