Michaela Breeze to retire after Commonwealth Games

Welsh weightlifter Michaela Breeze announces that she will retire for a second time after this summer's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Michaela Breeze, a two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist, has announced that she will retire from weightlifting after this summer's event in Glasgow.

The Wales native won first place in both the 2002 and 2006 Games but then retired after winning the silver in Delhi four years ago.

Breeze has enjoyed a strong return to the sport since her December comeback, breaking the British snatch record in March, and now takes to the Scottish capital in search of a third Commonwealth gold.

However, the 35-year-old says that the physical and mental demands of competing have taken their toll and now looks forward to "retirement party number two".

"Regardless of what happens, there will be retirement party number two," she is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

"I remember now why I retired. I remember how tough this is at the top end and it's hard to keep your body in shape. It's a challenge. It's a battle - not just physically, but mentally as well - and I'll be glad when it's over."

This summer's Games begin on July 23.
