World Cup absentees Slovakia and the Netherlands play out a 1-1 draw in Thursday night's international friendly at the City Arena Trnava.

World Cup absentees Slovakia and the Netherlands have played out a 1-1 draw in Thursday night's international friendly at the City Arena Trnava.

The hosts began brightly as Juraj Kucka weighed in with two early opportunities, but Dutch goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet was equal to both efforts.

Adam Nemec went on to open the scoring after just eight minutes played, however, connecting with Marek Hamsik's cross in the box and planting a header into the bottom-right corner of the net.

Slovakia continued to dominate proceedings for most of the first half, though Zoet had to be alert to keep out Memphis Depay's free kick on 37 minutes.

The Netherlands improved after the restart, with Daley Blind forcing a smart save from Martin Dubravka, before Quincy Promes rattled home just before the hour mark to level the scores.

Ruud Vormer came close twice for Ronald Koeman's side in a second half which lacked the intensity of the first but could not find a winner as neither side could be separated at full time.

The result means that Slovakia have not lost a home friendly since 2011, while Holland have lost just one of their last six games.

SLOVAKIA (4-3-3): Dubravka; Pekarik, Mazan, Skriniar, Hubocan (Satka 73'); Hamsik (Duda 73'), Lobotka, Kucka (Sabo 63'); Mak (Pacinda 63'), Nemec (Duris 63), Rusnak

NETHERLANDS (5-3-2): Zoet; De Ligt, Janmaat, Blind (Kongolo 68'), De Vrij, Van Aanholt; Strootman (De Roon 80') Van de Beek (Vormer 46'), Propper (Berghuis 75'); Depay, Promes (Weghorst 85')
