Arsenal reportedly turned down the chance to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Mauro Icardi in the January transfer window.

Arsenal reportedly turned down the chance to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Mauro Icardi in January.

The Gunners were in the market for a new centre-forward last month, after allowing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to join Barcelona on a free transfer.

According to The Athletic, Arsenal were offered the opportunity to recruit Icardi as part of a swap deal with PSG; however, Mikel Arteta was not convinced that the 28-year-old had the right characteristics for his philosophy at the Emirates Stadium.

Arteta opted to stick with Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah as his two striking options for the rest of the season.

With both Lacazette and Nketiah out of contract in the summer, the Gunners are expected to recruit at least one striker ahead of the 2022-23 campaign, with the likes of Real Sociedad's Alexander Isak, Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Chelsea's Armando Broja believed to be on their list of targets.

Icardi, who is under contract at the Parc des Princes until June 2024, has scored 38 goals in 87 appearances for PSG across all competitions, including just five in 25 games this season.
