Nine-man Vitoria de Guimaraes hold out for point against Academica de Coimbra

Vitoria de Guimaraes hold out for a point in their home tie against Academica de Coimbra, despite playing the final 30 minutes with nine men.

Vitoria de Guimaraes held out for a home point against Academica de Coimbra, despite playing the final half hour of the fixture with nine men.

Vitoria's Tomane got the only goal of the opening period, latching onto a ball played into the Academica area before slotting past Pedro Trigueira.

A flurry of yellow cards in the first half saw three Vitoria players, in the form of Edimio Rafael, Alex and Moreno, go into the referee's book.

Shortly after half time, Alex picked up his second yellow as he exited the field to leave Sergio Conceicao's side with ten men.

It was then Moreno's turn to once more invoke the wrath of the referee, as his late challenge was deemed a straight sending-off offence.

Moreno's red card left Vitoria with nine men on the field, something which Academica soon took advantage of.

Rafael Lopes fired home the leveller from close range in the 66th minute, leaving Vitoria keeper Douglas Jesus with no chance.

Academica proceeded to launch an onslaught on the Vitoria goal but the Guimaraes defence held tight to record a home point.

Vitoria move into 14th in the Primeira Liga table following the draw, while Academica move from the bottom spot into 17th.
